Assertiveness

Background

An important inter-personal skill is to ask people to do things they may not want to do, or to make comments about sensitive subjects effectively while maintaining their respect and even perhaps their friendship.

Objectives

  • To improve the basic skills of assertiveness
  • To provide the opportunity to practise saying difficult things - confidence building exercises
  • To practise giving and receiving criticism

Method

The approach is practical, and participants are given the opportunity, through demonstration role plays, to establish the basic principles. The remainder of their time is spent practising, in pairs, and groups, then reviewing progress.
