Gaining and Sustaining a Competitive Advantage

The need for a planned strategy

To thrive, we argue that organisations need to:

  • identify an attractive strategic position
  • ensure this strategic position can be sustained against competitors
  • devise processes to enable the whole organisation implement the competitive advantage
  • build the few core competencies to sustain the competitive advantage and strategically outsource non-core activities.

Underpinning this logic is the need for a planned approach to developing a competitive strategy. Our work has identified a planned approach to gaining and sustaining competitive advantage which helps focus managers in a logical manner on the critical factors to identify, then sustain a competitive advantage.

Helping you develop a competitive advantage

We would be pleased to work with you and your colleagues through a training programme to give the team appropriate knowledge and skills in this area. By using exercises during the training programme that focus on your area, this can also help surface new strategies.

What do we need to develop better strategies?

The sorts of new knowledge and skills that we’ve trained managers about in the past include such issues as:

  • Process of strategic marketing planning
  • Getting the most from market share data
  • Minimising risk using product-market matrices
  • All opportunities are not equal: prioritising by balanced opportunity attractiveness against success probability
  • Using a five forces model to assess the attractiveness of markets and to appreciate the profit enhancing and impeding forces
  • How can we identify critical success factors?
  • Categorising types of competitive advantage
  • Getting the most from value chain analysis: suitable implementation strategies and identifying competitor weaknesses
  • Capitalising on core competencies and identifying when and how to outsource non-core activities
  • Strategies for defending a position of strength
  • Prioritising strategies using product portfolio planning techniques
  • Taking on board the importance of strategic intent and stretch.

Where do we go from here?

Our experience is that each client has different needs and the first thing we need to do is understand your problem, then propose the most appropriate route forward.
