Building a Simple Online Presence for Local Trade

Building a Simple Online Presence for Local Trade

Why the First Look Decides the Job

Most local trade enquiries now start on a phone, usually while someone is standing in a cold kitchen or staring at a leak. They type a trade and a town into a search engine, scan three or four results, and ring the one that looks most like a real, local, competent business. That decision happens in under a minute.

The good news is that you do not need a glossy marketing campaign to win that minute. You need to be findable, look trustworthy, and make it dead simple to get in touch. A small plumbing, electrical, gardening, decorating or joinery firm can do all three with a handful of tools and an hour or two a month.

A Website That Does the Basics Properly

For most trade businesses, a single well-built page beats a sprawling site nobody updates. If you do offer clearly different services, a page per service helps, but only if each one is genuinely useful. Start with one page and add as you go.

  • Say what you do and where you do it. "Emergency callouts across Stockport and South Manchester" tells a customer more than "quality service since 2009".
  • Put the phone number at the top and make it tap-to-call on a mobile. If someone has to scroll to find it, you have already lost some of them.
  • Show your work. Ten genuine photos of your own jobs beat fifty stock images of smiling models in hard hats. Before-and-after shots do especially well.
  • Be clear on hours. State your normal hours, whether you take weekend work, and how you handle emergencies.
  • Explain what happens next. "Send a photo and a rough location, and we will reply the same day with a ballpark figure" removes the fear of an awkward phone call.

Keep it quick to load. Heavy image files and auto-playing video are the most common reason a small trade site feels sluggish on a phone with a weak signal. Compress your photos before uploading and you will notice the difference immediately.

Your Listings Are Often More Important Than Your Website

Many customers never reach your website at all. They look at map results, directory entries and review pages, decide from those, and ring straight from the listing. That means the details on those listings have to be correct and identical everywhere.

  • Keep your business name, address and phone number the same across every listing. Inconsistencies confuse search engines and customers alike.
  • Choose the right categories. "Electrician" and "Lighting contractor" behave differently. Pick the closest match rather than the most flattering one.
  • Add real opening hours and update them for bank holidays. Nothing frustrates a customer more than a listing claiming you are open when you are not.
  • Upload fresh photos every month or two. Recent images signal an active business; five-year-old ones do not.
  • Ask for reviews properly. A short message the day after a job finishes, with a direct request, gets far better results than hoping people remember.
  • Reply to every review, including the awkward ones. A calm, professional response to a complaint often persuades more people than a glowing five-star write-up.

Regular Updates Without the Slog

You do not need a content strategy. You need a routine that takes twenty minutes and survives a busy week. Consistency matters far more than volume.

  • Post one photo from a job with a sentence about what you did and roughly where.
  • Add a short seasonal note — gutter clearing before autumn, boiler checks before winter, exterior painting when the weather allows.
  • Update your hours around Christmas, Easter and any holiday you take.
  • Log completed jobs with a line of detail; after a year you have a portfolio and a list of customers to follow up with.

If you employ anyone, agree who posts and when. Shared logins and unclear ownership are how trade social accounts go quiet for eight months.

Turning a Look Into a Booked Job

Being found is only half of it. The gap between interest and a booking is usually where small firms lose work.

  • Answer, or reply fast. A missed call on a Saturday morning is a job for someone else by lunchtime. If you cannot answer, have a message option and check it twice a day.
  • Give a clear response time and stick to it — even if it is only to say you will come back with a price tomorrow.
  • Quote in writing. A short message or email confirming the scope, price and rough timeline prevents most disputes later.
  • Follow up once. A polite nudge a few days after a quote is not pushy; many customers are simply busy.

Small Fixes That Make a Real Difference

If you only do a few things this month, do these. Check that your phone number is correct on every listing. Add three recent photos to your website. Set your opening hours properly, including whether you take emergency calls. Ask your last five customers for a review. Write down what you will update next month, and put it in the diary.

None of this requires a big budget or a marketing agency. It requires the same thing that keeps a trade business running in the first place: turning up, doing the job properly, and being easy to reach. Your online presence just needs to reflect that — accurately, consistently, and in plain English.
